The impressive flora and fauna of Sierra Leone is an attraction of its own. There are many areas in like Gola National Reserve and Mt Bintumani with rewarding trails of various lengths. Banana Island is much more accessible from Freetown with smaller trails, but with substantial number of species. The well preserved forest of the island does not hold a great variety of mammals but it makes up for it in birds. Rare species like the Picathartes Gymnocephalus and the endangered Rufous Fishing-owl have been spotted on the island. Apart from the accessibility advantage of Banana Island another major advantage is the bird watchers can wonder the forest of Banana Island without a guide.
